Nell’autunno della sua vita, Thomas conduce un’esistenza semplice, isolato nel suo appartamento seminterrato, dove gli fanno compagnia una radio, una scacchiera e una foto della moglie. Non si avventura spesso all’aperto e quando lo fa, il mondo esterno gli rammenta la sua età avanzata, la sua solitudine e ricordi che preferirebbe dimenticare. Ha la sensazione di vivere una storia senza fine e per poterla concludere, Thomas deve affrontare il suo passato. «Sono vecchio, e la vita è lunga».

In the autumn of his life, Thomas leads a simple, isolated life in his basement apartment, with a radio, a chessboard and a picture of his wife. He doesn’t venture out very often, and when he does, the outside world reminds him of his advanced age, his loneliness and times he would rather not remember. He feels like a never-ending story; and to make himself a whole, Thomas has to face his past. « I am an old man, and life is long ».

Una volta ero in libreria e ho preso per caso una raccolta di novelle intitolata Le ultime note al pubblico di Thomas F’s, di Kjell Askildsen. Lessi il libro e mi fu chiaro che dovevo farne un film. La storia di quest’uomo solo, di ottantatre anni, era così meravigliosamente dolorosa, toccante, che non potevo semplicemente continuare per la mia strada e dimenticarmela.
E poi l’attore Lasse Pöysti nei panni di Thomas, lo adoro. Senza di lui non ci sarebbe stato nessun Thomas. È stato molto difficile trovare i finanziamenti. Alla fine ci siamo ritrovati con soli 197.000 euro. E allora, cosa fare? Io e il mio produttore, Janne Wrigstedt, decidemmo di fare il film comunque: «Forse gli altri non credono nel film, ma noi sì». Così abbiamo girato il film in nove giorni con 197.000 euro. È stata molto dura. Correvamo da un set all’altro e poi dovevamo fermarci e girare la scena più tranquilla del mondo, correre su un altro set e di nuovo la scena più tranquilla del mondo... Sono molto contento di averlo fatto, perché penso che sia un buon film... e adesso io e Janne potremo sempre dire: «Abbiamo fatto Thomas in nove giorni con 197.000 euro, cosa pensate che potremmo fare con un milione e mezzo e trenta giorni?».

The director says
Once I was in a library and I accidentally picked a short story collection called "Thomas F's Last Notes to The Public", by Kjell Askildsen. I read the book and I knew that I had to make a film from this book. This story about this 83-year-old lonely man, was so painful in the most beautiful way, so I couldn’t just walk away and forget it. And the actor Lasse Pöysti as Thomas, I just love that man. Without him, there would be no Thomas.
We had big problems funding the film. We ended up with just 197,000 euros. So what could we do? My producer Janne Wrigstedt, and I, wanted to make the film anyway, «Maybe others do not believe in our film, but we do». So we shot the film in 9 days, and with 197,000 euros. It was so hard. We ran from location to location, we had to stop and shoot the most peaceful scene in the world and then we ran again to another location to shoot another most peaceful scene in the world... Well, I’m really happy that we did it, because I think it is a good film. And Janne and I can always say: «We made Thomas in 9 days with 197,000 euros, what do you think we can do with 1,5 million and in 30 days?».
