For some time, Portuguese cinema has been one of the most vital, creative and stimulating realities of the contemporary cinematographic panorama, whose recognition has been possible above all thanks to festivals, reviews and canonical distribution circuits. A cinema that, beyond the individual differences, has imposed itself in the imagination for the desire to distort, with imagination and rigor, the reality of rubble caused by the economic crisis and austerity programs.
Among the names that have emerged in the last few years is that of João Nicolau, one of the protagonists of the Europe, Now! section of the 38th Bergamo Film Meeting, guest, Saturday 14 March at 18:30, at FilmTv Lab for a meeting-interview.
Before becoming a director, Nicolau began his career working as an editor, initially involved in ethnographic projects and then began to collaborate with a prominent figure such as Miguel Gomes. The directorial debut occurred with two shorts immediately presented at the Cannes Film Festival’s Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, followed by the first feature film, “A Espada and a Rosa” (2010), screened at the Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti section. His second feature, “John From“, imposed a startled style made up of displacements, irony and surrealism which was later confirmed in his latest work “Technoboss“.
