Waterland Song - Canto della terra d'acqua
Directed by Adriano Smaldone, Francesco GiarrussoItalian title: Waterland Song - Canto della terra d'acqua
Portugal / Italy / 2009 / 30’

Canto da terra d’água is strongly characterized by a geological-archaeological approach in which landscapes play a crucial role: telluric, independent blocks that describe events buried by the temporal sedimentation of Portugal’s Trás-os-Montes region. The actions of the main characters, David Afonso’s words and work, Adélia Garcia’s songs, as well as the narrator’s reading of private letters, cut into empty spaces; this lets us dive within the layers that make up time, history and imagery of the region. The two characters are always kept apart in the film; they are linked from a distance by the letters that are read by a neutral, female voice.
