Seen from above, London reveals its constant metamorphosis, spurred by a multitude of cranes enacting some kind of mechanical ballet. Both these cranes and their operators, in their privileged, eccentric and solitary position, tell a story of changing moods and landscapes, a story told as they watch the streets, squares and parks, the river Thames, but also windows, offices and other recesses of everyday life. What is the psychological impact of these amazing, powerful man-made machines on those men and women who operate them and spend most of their lives removed from the world they are building? Without cranes our modern cities would be hard to imagine. Once we become aware of that, we’ll start seeing cranes everywhere…
