17 July-5 August. Gaspard goes to the sea, on the Breton coast. He stays alone in the house of some friends; then he goes to the beach: a crowded beach of teenagers, in front of Saint-Malo. Gaspard is there because he has a sort of date with a girlfriend more “likely” than real. But the girl does not show up, and Gaspard spends his time weaving chatter, walks, confidences, with two other peers met on the spot. Conte d’été develops the themes of The Green Ray but taking them in different directions. In short, it is a Rohmerian classic, impeccable, light, elegant as always. The Italian title is of course completely unfounded for this refined and acute “summer story”.
