Il racconto della giovinezza di William Scott, celebre pittore inglese del dopoguerra. Nato in una famiglia poverissima formata da dieci tra fratelli e sorelle si trasferisce in Irlanda, terra natale del padre che però muore precocemente. Un’insegnante gli impartisce lezioni gratuite e convince la madre ad iscriverlo al College of Art di Belfast.
