On the outskirts of a city in southern Europe, a young couple begins their day with the work routine: collecting the pets that have died from their owners to cremate them and return their ashes. In addition to this paid work, the two also collect and cremate animals found on the street while driving their car, which also seems to be their home. In this endless endless cycle of life, humans and animals coexist harmoniously, until the couple causes an accident. Set in a visually stunning and desolate landscape with an eerie sensuality, Kala azar is a film about death and life itself. It is no coincidence that the title of the film comes from an infectious disease that decimated the dog population of southern Europe.

In 2017 with this project Janis Rafa wins Schermo dell’arte Feature Expanded Distribution Award.
