Il giardino di Jad
Directed by Georgi LazarevskiItalian title: Il giardino di Jad
France / 2007 / 60'

In East Jerusalem the construction of the separation wall goes on a few meters from a seniors’ home. Its noisy, unavoidable progression gradually isolates the residents from the world of the living. In the gardens of Our Lady of Pains people demonstrate against the wall construction to fight their own anger and a nostalgic longing for lost freedom. A man shouts his political views at the tv news in the common room while two women argue over songs. A man savours the momentary pleasures of a cigarette; he silently strolls around the house and the surrounding area. While presenting a painful sense of despair, the film also captures a sense of levity and hope in its use of lush colours and portrayal of simple pleasures.
