1852, French Lower Alps. Violette is old enough to get married when her village is cruelly deprived of all its men by the repression that followed the Republican uprising against Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. The women spend months in total isolation and desperate to see one day their men again, swear an oath: if a man should come, he will become their shared husband, so that life may continue to flourish in each of their wombs. When Jean, a mysterious and charismatic blacksmith, stopped by the village destabilizes the unity of the female group, which begins to see in him an obscure object of desire.
