The sixteen-year-old Lilja lives in the ruin of a post-Soviet city. Abandoned by her mother, she is forced to prostitute herself to survive. His only true friend is Volodya, a boy mistreated by his father and even more lonely than her. Her boyfriend, Andrei, convinces her to leave for Sweden, with the promise of a real job, instead she is kidnapped and segregated by an exploiter, who condemns her to a spiral of fear, abuse and violence.
