Having survived the concentration camps but disfigured by a bullet wound, Nelly returns to Germany with the help of her friend Lene to undergo facial reconstruction surgery. Once her convalescence period is over, she sets out in search of her husband Johnny, who believes her to be dead, despite Lene trying to dissuade her and suggesting that she leave the country. When she finds him, the man does not recognise her, but catching a glimpse of a strong resemblance persuades her to pass herself off as her husband in order to help him redeem his inheritance.
