In an occupied Paris, Georg narrowly escapes a round-up and takes refuge in Marseilles, where he tries to obtain a visa to sail to America. By a series of circumstances, he is mistaken for the well-known writer Weidel, who died by suicide, and assumes his identity. Fate leads him to meet other refugees waiting to leave France. He also meets Marie, Weidel’s wife, who is unaware of her husband’s fate and continues to search for him. Meanwhile, the occupying forces are also about to reach Marseille.
