Mark and Joanna Wallace, a wealthy English couple, are travelling by car to the South of France; their relationship, frayed by resentment and misunderstandings, is falling apart. On the way, the couple recalls a similar trip they made to the same places twelve years earlier, at the beginning of their marriage, when they were penniless but happy.
