Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho Live Orchestra
The Masterpiece of the Master of Suspense, live scored by the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Milan directed by maestro Anthony Gabriele
The 41st edition of the Bergamo Film Meeting – to be held from March 11 to March 19 – will be ushered in by a special event organised as part of the initiatives for Bergamo Brescia Italian Capital of Culture 2023.
Friday, March 10, at 9:00 PM, the Donizetti Theatre in Bergamo will host the Italian preview of the live scoring – of Psycho (USA, 1960) by Alfred Hitchcock performed by the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Milan conducted by Maestro Anthony Gabriele.
A string section of 35 members, selected among the students of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Milan (all under 25, Conservatory undergraduates or graduates), the orchestra will be directed by maestro Anthony Gabriele, an internationally acclaimed conductor who specialises in “Film with Orchestra” concerts. The orchestra will perform the iconic score, composed by Oscar winner Bernard Herrmann, in synch with the original version of Hitchcock’s masterpiece, starring an amazing and tormented Anthony Perkins.
On Saturday, March 11, at 8:30 PM, the soundtrack will also be performed live at the Fondazione Cariplo Auditorium in Milan.
«Bergamo Film Meeting is one of the top events in our city and among the most important and long-running international film festivals in Italy. With Bergamo and Brescia being the Italian Capital of Culture this year, the Department of Culture strongly wished to support and promote the organisation that has been bringing film culture to Bergamo for 41 years, making it one of the highlights of the BGBS2023 programme. The opening of BFM is always an eagerly anticipated event, and in 2023 we wanted to make it even more special, starting from its splendid location, the Donizetti Theatre. A national premiere, the event was made possible thanks to the efforts of the Bergamo Film Meeting staff, the collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra of Milan and the sponsorship of the Bergamo Brescia Committee».

Psycho (USA, 1960) by Alfred Hitchcock
Norman Bates is a taxidermist and voyeur whose creepy old house and adjacent motel are not quite the most suitable places to spend a quiet evening. No one knows this better than Marion Crane, the hapless customer whose journey ends in the infamous shower scene: the most famous 45 seconds in film history, accompanied by an unmistakable string ostinato. Her sister and a private investigator come looking for her. Hitchcock masterfully plays with the audience’s expectations and emotions: tension and suspense mount until the face of the mysterious killer is finally revealed.
The Youth Symphony Orchestra of Milan
The Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro Sinfonico di Milano has always paid special attention to youth, with targeted musical proposals and by cultivating musical ensembles composed of young people and children. Out of this commitment, the new project of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Milan was born in October 2021: a training program aimed at musicians under 25 years of age, fresh graduates and undergraduates close to the conclusion of their musical studies.
The Youth Symphony Orchestra of Milan project is, therefore, the ideal link between the educational and professional spheres.
